Developing Leadership for Yourself and Your Team

In the past, developing leadership was often seen as something that came naturally with experience or position. Anyone managing a team primarily had to make decisions, maintain control and ensure results were achieved. Today, that image has changed. Leadership is no longer a one-time step but a continuous process that begins with self-insight and translates into impact on others. Because not only organizations but also the labor market are constantly in motion, leadership requires more than just steering for results. It is about providing direction, creating connection and offering space for development. Leaders who invest in this, are building trust, engagement and sustainable performance.

“We see that leadership is increasingly less about position or hierarchy and more about how you conduct yourself as a person,” says Chantal Juijn-Goossens of Engagement Builders. “People see right through it when leaders play a role. Authentic leadership requires courage, but it also delivers a lot: more trust, better conversations and teams that take responsibility instead of waiting around. Fortunately, leadership can be learned and grown into, which is what we work on every day.”

What Are Leadership Qualities?

Leadership qualities are traits and skills that enable someone to inspire others, provide direction and achieve goals together. It is not just about what you do, but especially about how you do it. Think of communication, decision-making and the ability to involve people in change.

Important leadership qualities include:

  • clear and open communication
  • providing trust and sharing responsibility
  • daring to make choices
  • empathy and self-awareness
  • offering vision and direction

A key component of this is personal leadership. Personal leadership is about knowing yourself, taking responsibility for your behavior and making conscious choices. Someone who is strong in personal leadership knows what they stand for and can manage others from that foundation. This results in more peace, clarity and effectiveness.

Additionally, there are various styles of leadership. A well-known example is situational leadership, a model based on the idea that there is no single correct way to lead. Effective leaders adapt their style to the situation and the development level of their employees. Sometimes this requires clear guidance and direction, for example with new tasks or inexperienced team members. In other situations, a coaching style is more appropriate, where the leader supports, asks questions and helps build responsibility. When people are independent and experienced, letting go and giving trust is essential. Situational leadership makes it clear that good leadership requires flexibility, self-insight and the ability to constantly realign with what a team needs at that moment.

Authentic Leadership

Authentic leadership is about leading from within. In practice, this means acting based on your values and showing who you are, rather than playing a role or adapting to what you think is expected of you. When leaders do not do this, distance often arises: people feel less trust, do not say what they really think and follow mainly because they have to. When leaders are authentic, openness and engagement emerge. Employees know where they stand, dare to give feedback and feel seen. This makes leaders credible and ensures stronger teams and better collaboration.

Characteristics of authentic leadership include:

  • self-awareness: knowing who you are and what drives you
  • transparency: communicating honestly about intentions and decisions
  • consistency: acting in line with your values

Developing Authentic Leadership

Authentic leadership can be developed. This starts with reflection: pausing to consider your behavior and its effect on others. Feedback plays an important role in this. Additionally, it helps to clarify your personal values and translate them into your daily leadership.

Training in authentic leadership often focuses on awareness, practicing in real situations and strengthening personal impact. In this way, leadership grows from something theoretical into something that becomes visible in practice.

“Good leaders are not the ones who already know everything, but the ones who remain curious. About themselves, about others and about what is needed in the moment. Developing leadership is also about practicing: making clear choices, setting boundaries and still maintaining connection, even when things get tense.” – Matthijs van der Bijl, owner and trainer (Engagement Builders)

Leadership Training

Leadership training helps leaders to further develop and deepen their qualities. Good training combines theory with practice and aligns with the daily reality of managers.

Engagement Builders offers leadership training that always starts from the context of the organization. No standard programs, but customized trajectories in which personal leadership, authentic leadership and the development of leadership competencies come together. This ensures that leaders not only learn but also actually make a difference within their teams and organizations.
